Our body is designed to heal itself. However, sometimes we may want to aid the process of healing with a little help from the kitchen shelf. Here are a few simple recipes to take away those aches and pains. Keep in mind these are suggestions only, and not meant to substitute the advice of a qualified physician.
To stop diarrhea, peel and cook a couple of apples until soft. Add a pinch of nutmeg, saffron and some ghee and eat slowly. For chronic diarrhoea and indigestion, eat 7 fresh figs. Do not drink water for an hour. Not in a mood for any of these, then eat a pear by itself to stop diarrhoea. Diarrhoea can also be stopped by drinking a cup of lassi with two pinches of black pepper powder, stirred together and drunk twice a day. Not in a mood to eat? Just rub a little ginger juice on the belly button. It will help with the diarrhea and stop the abdominal pain.
Constipated? try pineapple juice. Juicing seems like a pain! Drink a cup of water with a teaspoon of salt.
Bitter melon or the famous karela, is good for cleansing the liver. Detox the liver, by drinking warm water added to honey and juice of half a lemon. To add more punch, boil a few tulsi (holy basil) leaves in the water. Steep till warm, then add to the honey lemon mixture. Do this first thing in the morning and your liver will thank you for it.
Mix two teaspoons cilantro juice, 1 teaspoon jaggery and half teaspoon ginger juice. You have a handy cough syrup for the day. For a chronic coughtry half cup spinach soup mixed with one fourth teaspoon ginger, twice a day. Have this on an empty stomach. For acute throat irritation and coughing, chew half teaspoon ajwain and top up by drinking a cup of warm water. For common cold and congestion, mix half teaspoon cinnamon and one teaspoon honey. Eat three times a day.
For a Sinus headache make a paste of water and cinnamon powder and apply it on the forehead. For a headache apply a pinch of nutmeg paste to the affected area.
For flu boil a tablespoon of tulsi leaves in a cup of water. Boil for a minute, cover and strain and drink. For cold, congestion and flu symptoms, have a cup of tea made with a teaspoon each of dry ginger, fennel and cinnamon.
Unable to digest meat? One hour after eating meat, drink a cup of tomato juice with a pinch of cumin powder. It will aid digestion.
One cup tomato juice, one fourth teaspoon black pepper and a pinch of hing and rock salt, bring relief from indigestion.For indigestion, chew on a mixture of roasted fennel and cumin seeds after a meal. Treat chronic indigestion by drinking a cup of of carrot juice with a pinch of ginger powder.
For nausea and vomiting chew on half teaspoon ajwain with one clove, followed by half a cup of warm water. Do this 3 times a day. For nausea or an upset stomach make a tea with a teaspoon of cumin seeds and a pinch of ground nutmeg. Boil and steep for 10 minutes before drinking.
Unable to quit smoking? Chew small pieces of pineapple with half teaspoon honey to balance nicotine toxicity and reduce smoking habits.
Hangover? a cup of fresh orange juice with one teaspoon lime juice and a pinch of cumin powder help.
